Dusego Inaugural Camp Closing Event: A Day of Encouragement

When we started building the Dusego Empowerment Hub in 2023, we knew we were creating more than just a building. We were crafting a home for the Dusego community—especially for children and youth in rural areas—where they could access education beyond formal classroom and opportunities for a better future. We understood that this journey would require time, patience, and dedication.

In June 2024, after completing the first phase of construction, the Hub became fully active. A month later, as students began their two-month holiday, we realized something important. In rural areas like Dusego, there was no place offering after-school programs, so we welcomed students, despite not having a complete plan. It was a learning process for all of us.

We welcomed 232 children from Dusego and surrounding villages. 70% of them are girls and these children normally attend 10 different schools from the region:

  • Groupe Scolaire Mwendo (R)
  • Groupe Scolaire Mutara
  • Groupe Scolaire Notre Dame de Lourdes Byimana
  • Ecole Primaire de Gishweru
  • Ecole Primaire Nyabigugu
  • Groupe Scolaire Umubano I
  • Ecole Saint Andre Gitarama
  • Bright Future Academy
  • Ecole Primaire de Mugomba
  • Bright Competent School

At the Hub, we offered English communication lessons, access to a library for reading, and arts sessions—with focus on poetry, songs, traditional dance, drumming, and acrobatics. These activities helped the students not only stay physically active but also build mental resilience.

On Saturday, September 7, 2024, we held a closing ceremony as the students prepared to return to school. It was a day for students to proudly showcase what they had learned during the summer camp to their parents, the community, and friends of Dusego. Guests from Kigali and local leaders also joined us in celebrating the students’ achievements.

I was deeply moved by how quickly the children had learned and how deeply they felt connected to the Hub. In their poems and songs, they described the Dusego Empowerment Hub as their home—a second parent. It was not just a place of learning, but a source of life lessons that didn’t require any school fees.

I was overwhelmed by the love and support we received from our community. It was emotional, inspiring, and it gave us hope. We know that with continued support, we can do even more for Dusego and for our country.

This progress would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our team: Uwera Jeannette, Iradukunda Jeannette, Agnes Uwizera, Ignace Turabumukiza, and Romain Theophile Mizero. We are grateful for their tireless efforts in making the Hub a reality.
